Dragons have long been associated with masculinity

Dragons have long been associated with masculinity and in Asia, male monarchies, which made it hard for me to be inspired by this year's zodiac sign. I didn't want to draw "badass dragons" or "violent dragons" or even "traditional dragons."

This discomfort is how I ended up with a series of envelope illustrations that are cute and a bit wink-wink, that subvert the idea of manly might and power. (And why the B-side of the envelopes are all florals and feminine.)

The other four illustration concepts came fast, but this last one took a while. For this last one, I dropped the pretense of humor and srsly drew something I think is transparent in meaning. 😘

Walnut plywood "floating" desk.

Made for my bedroom, as a second work desk because sometimes I work up there (instead of in my office downstairs) and I pretend I'm at an Airbnb on Orcas Island! That's why this desk was designed for lewks instead of comfort or productivity.

I was inspired by secretary desks and writing desks of yesteryear.

This desk has darkened over time. Wood is nuts!

I actually didn't start out intending to make these envelopes two-sided/double-sided. The realization that I was making something that can be turned inside-out dawned on me in the middle of it, so I leaned into it fully. I figure there's a quirky side (the REAL SIDE) and a more conservative side that we can give to our more old-fashioned, humorless aunties. (Tho, not sure how many of us are giving li xi to our aunties?!)

Here's design #4 for my Year of the Dragon lucky envelopes this year! It features a luck dragon (lolololol).

Ok, who else grew up watching The Neverending Story movies? Who else was totally confused as a kid over why they were calling Falkor, the flying dog, a DRAGON?

That serves as the inspo behind this envelope design. The model for my version of Falkor is my own doppelganger dog, Maxipad. Scroll thru the images to see the inspos. ❤️

For these envelopes, I decided to do diff illustration styles for each. This one features a sketchy sensibility. The person flying on the luck "dragon" is an API female, not Atreyu. Because all of my envelope designs feature women or girls this year!

I made this pull down table on my deck cuz I need

I made this pull down table on my deck cuz I need a place to put food on, out there sometimes.

The materials I used are leftover cedar planks from a trellis. The "outside" of this table is painted the same color as the house. The "inside" is the same oil-based deck stain that I used for the trellis.
