Here are the dirty deets for this year's lì xì.

This is my sixth year making these and what's been interesting to me is how the designs each year reflect my shifting/evolving sense of Vietnamese Americanness. Like, these horses are just about as traditional and as "serious," thematically, as I've ever done, what with the landscape, the symbolism, and the mythical animals.

Tết Illustrations in the past have had different approaches: some of them have been superficial (Year of the Ox), cheeky (Year of the Cat), subversive (Year of the Dragon), but I've resisted being a traditionalist or being faithful to Vietnamese culture in these illos. UNTIL THIS YEAR.

I'm older, chiller, and I've decided it actually doesn't have to be that deep all the time. I've spent nearly a year taking language lessons trying to sound just a little more eloquent in Vietnamese, and as a consequence of that effort, also learned a lot about culture, unlearned a lot about culture — and so when it came down to drawing this sucker, I was at a place in life where I could be like, "Yeah, dude, let's do it. Horse galloping majestically, lacquer painting-style. With pagodas."

Of course, there is still a little bit of fun and subversion. There are so many horse butts in this illustration, for instance, as well as the "lazy" horses who are just taking naps and enjoying their lives, because that's actually what I want in the next year. More naps and being busy doing nothing!!!!

Inspo: Vietnamese stuff! But mostly mother-of-pearl inlay lacquer paintings. But also mythical creatures, sacred animals, and symbols of the four seasons. Guys, I went super Viet this year.

New Feature: These no-glue envelopes are still reversible, but what's new this year is that the reversible design is a classic mailer envelope design, with space for addresses and a stamp, if you want to send these on an adventure to far away lands.

New add-ons this year, also in my shop:
❤️ Set of Horsey Notecards, for handwritten messages
❤️ Set of sticker-tape, to seal these envelopes so they can go through the mail.

(FYI, be careful sending cash through the mail. USPS strongly discourages it because they are no fun.)
