Happy New Year (almost)! Chúc mừng năm mới (almost)!

This was done for @nwasianweekly. I do a lunar new year illustration for them just about every year. I used to work there as its editor and working at a community newspaper was the most expansive experience for a fresh-faced, idealistic college grad.

This week, after more than four decades of being voices for API and Chinese communities, @nwasianweekly and it's sister the Seattle Chinese Post both published their final print issues this week. NWAW will continue online-only, and we're saying bye to SCP.

It's not quite the new year yet, so right now, those who celebrate are appropriately in the mode of tying up loose ends and preparing for renewal.

This illustration was done for the very last print issue of NWAW (out on stands RN). 🙏 The illo is content-rich cuz I learned at one point that you need to jam up every inch of space above the fold or else it's my fault that readership drops. 😜🥰 Flip thru to see the details.

This is the fifth and final illustration for this year's li xi lucky envelope set, celebrating the Year of the Cat! I have been elated to hear about how many of you have been failing trivia contests and going around correctly telling people that it's actually the Year of the Cat! 👍👍 🐈🐈🐈

Illo description: Pandan jelly kitties hanging a riotous good time in chè cat tower. Chè is a category of Vietnamese sweet-snack soups puddings. In this illo, there are chè bà màu, chè nhãn, chè chuối, and chè khoai môn with jackfruit. It was hard to narrow down which to feature. The illo also features chrysanthemums, which I have JUST realized are the same flowers as the MUMS at the grocery store. (Did you know?!)

While it's not quite the Year of the Cat yet (according to the Lunar calendar), please enjoy this teaser illustration, which you'll be able to enjoy in its entirety in my future Year of the Cat li xi / lucky envelopes. Not sure exactly when they will drop, but prob in like, five days if I can get my act together.

Illo synopsis: cats made of nuoc cham (fish sauce dipping sauce) chilling on little ramekins of banh beo, a Hue specialty yum-yum, that look like cat towers.

Year of the Cat is same as Year of the Rabbit. I keep repeating this cuz ppl get confused when I talk about it in everyday life, and I don't want you to be confused!
